THE WILLIAM E. SCHMIDT VOCAL INSTITUTE

The Schmidt Vocal Institute is open to high school students who are rising sophomores, juniors, seniors, and entering college freshmen. Singers may participate in the Schmidt Vocal Institute more than one season, but preference will be given to new applicants.

 

The William E. Schmidt Vocal Institute (SVI) nurtures and mentors the development of talented, young singers who wish to pursue studies in music performance and/or education. The curriculum focuses on training singers to have a healthy technique, improved musicianship, and outstanding performance skills.

 

Participants of SVI will receive:

 

  • Private lessons and coachings
  • Master classes with guest artists
  • Two public performances
  • Stage performance and acting workshops
  • Courses in lyric diction, vocal health, and historic performances
  • Alexander Technique and Yoga courses
  • "How to prepare for college auditions" workshop
  • Access to live performances of opera

 

Partnership with CINCINNATI OPERA

  • Tickets to Cincinnati Opera production of Roméo et Juliette
  • Master class with Cincinnati Opera Artistic Director, Evans Mirageas
  • Master class with Cincinnati Opera principal artist (TBA)
  • Master class with Cincinnati Opera young artists

HOW TO APPLY FOR THE SCHMIDT VOCAL INSTITUTE

Applicants are also encouraged to apply for the Schmidt Youth Vocal Competition that occurs in sixteen states throughout the United States.  Over $150,000 in prizes & scholarships awarded annually!

1.  Submit Application via YAPTracker.  Singers may apply via video, by   appointment in Cincinnati or Oxford, OH, or by participation in a Schmidt Vocal Competition before March 10, 2019. If via the Schmidt Vocal Competition, singers must also fill out an application for the competition at schmidtcompetition.org.

 

2. Submit Teacher Recommendation

Have your private voice teacher or choral director email Linda McAlister mcalisll@miamioh.edu within 10 days of your submission.

Schmidt Foundation provides support and encouragement to youth in the arts.  Annually the Foundation provides scholarships and support to over one hundred and fifty students in the arts.
